There are a plethora of amazing beaches dotted around the UK, however, my favourite has to be Greatstone Beach in Kent. With part of my family being from there it is somewhere I’ve visited many times growing up, so it holds a special place in my heart. Often it’s the special memories you make that make a beach truly unforgettable. You can uncover even more about this idyllic beach later in the blog.
When it comes to finding the best sandy beach in the UK, we recommend heading to Cornwall. With swathes of golden sand, there are plenty of options to choose from. Here, you’ll find Perranporth Beach along with several other sandy delights, including Porthcurno Beach and Crantock Beach.
There are countless beaches in the UK with clean water. The Blue Flag Programme states in its criteria that in order to be a Blue Flag beach, beaches must have ‘Excellent bathing water quality’. Camber Sands, stretches along the East Sussex coast near Rye on one side and the Kent town of Lydd on the other. This vast, golden expanse seems to go on forever! Camber Sands boasts miles of soft, fine sand that’s perfect for barefoot strolls, beach games with the family, or simply lounging with a good book.
Camber Sands offers a little something for everyone. Watersports fans can take advantage of the strong coastal winds, with kite surfing and paddleboarding popular around here. It also offers fantastic spaces to build what could be the best sandcastle ever in the UK; the competition is on.

In third place on our list is a beach known as one of the best beaches in England so it easily makes it onto the list of the nicest beaches in the UK. We’re of course talking about this is of course, Durdle Door Beach.
Set along the jaw-dropping Jurassic Coast in Dorset, this beach is nothing short of iconic, with the famous limestone arch standing boldly in the sea, it offers one of the most memorable beach day spots in the UK.
The beach is a combination of shingle and pebbles and curves gently around the coast beneath the towering cliffs above. The crystal-clear waters invite you in for a refreshing spot of wild swimming, or if you’re feeling adventurous, kayaking through the arch or into nearby coves.
Dog are also welcome on this beach all year round, so you can bring your furry friend along with you to enjoy the sights and sounds of the seaside. The beach connects to the car park via the South West Coastal Path, which stretches over 600 miles between the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset; luckily to reach the beach it is only a short walk.
There are also toilets on-site at the car park but there are no food and drink options, however it you head on the coastal path towards Lulworth Cove, you can explore Lulworth Cove Beach as well as a number of different cafés and pubs in the little village.
With its wild beauty and that jaw-dropping scenery, Durdle Door Beach feels like something our of a coastal dream!

Next up on our list of the best sandy beaches in the UK is Holkham Beach, nestled along the stunning North Norfolk coast. Reached via Lady Anne’s Drive, this beach boasts an unspoilt stretch of golden sand and wonderfully clear waters; it’s coastal perfection!
This beautiful shoreline forms part of the Holkham National Nature Reserve, which is celebrated for its rich biodiversity. Just behind the beach, you’ll find enchanting pinewoods that are also part of the reserve, perfect for a family ramble in a picture-perfect setting. Holkham is also a dog-friendly beach, so your pooch is welcome too! Just be aware that there may be some seasonal restrictions in place during nesting season, to help protect the local wildlife.
Fancy a bit of birdwatching? Keep an eye out for the handy bird hides scattered around the reserve and woodlands, you never know what feathered friends you might spot, whether inland or along the coast.
When you’re ready for a break, pop by The Lookout Café, located near the car park. It serves up a tasty selection of hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, and hot baps; there’s no better way to end a day at the beach!

From diving and powerboating to bike hire for exploring the seafront on wheels, there’s no shortage of things to do. And with Bournemouth being one of the closest beaches to London, it’s the ideal escape for a spontaneous weekend away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Rhosneigr Beach earns its place on our list of the best beaches in the UK for plenty of good reasons. For starters, it’s a proud recipient of the Green Coast Award, which celebrates beaches that shine when it comes to environmental excellence.
Tucked along the North Wales coast, this idyllic spot is framed by soft dunes and rugged rock formations, a dream come true if you’re into watersports or just fancy a windswept walk.
But it’s not all about the sand and sea. The beach is backed by some brilliant local gems. From Rhosneigr’s friendly, laid-back cafés to the tranquil waters of Llyn Maelog, rich in birdlife and perfect for nature lovers, there’s plenty to make your day by the coast one to remember.
And if you’re up for exploring, Rhosneigr is a brilliant base for discovering the delights of the Isle of Anglesey. Expect sweeping golden beaches, jaw-dropping views across to mainland North Wales, and iconic sights like Snowdonia National Park right on your doorstep. Next up in our guide to the best British beaches is the lovely Greatstone Beach, my personal favourite. Tucked away on Kent’s Romney Marsh coastline, this gem offers plenty of space and scenic charm for a brilliant day out by the sea.
Stretching for around two miles, the beach boasts soft, flat sands that roll out for nearly half a mile at low tide, perfect for beach games, sunbathing, or simply soaking up the salty sea air. Just be sure to check those tide times before setting off!
Greatstone is a big hit with watersports fans too. Its conditions are ideal for windsurfing and kiteboarding, so there’s no shortage of ways to make a splash. Prefer something more traditional? No problem, there’s miles of sand for building sandcastles or collecting pretty shells left behind by the tide, all against a backdrop of peace and quiet.
The main car park is conveniently located and comes with handy facilities, including toilets. A short stroll away, you’ll find some cracking spots to eat and drink. Enjoy hearty pub grub at the Jolly Fisherman or enjoy a British classic, fish and chips, at the Greatstone Fish Bar.
After tucking into fish and chips, take a walk along the shoreline to reach the much-loved hamlet of Dungeness. It’s home to some brilliant foodie finds too, including the popular Pilot Inn and the coastal favourite Dungeness Snack Shack.
With its wide-open sands, water-based thrills and fab local flavour, Greatstone Beach is undoubtedly one the best beaches in the UK, and I can’t wait for my next visit!

Formby Beach has more than earned its place among the best beaches in the UK, and it’s easy to see why. With its breathtaking coastal views and wonderfully unspoilt surroundings, it’s the kind of place that makes you stop and say wow, especially as it’s located so close to a thriving city.
This stretch of Merseyside coastline is a haven for nature lovers and day-trippers alike. Look forward to wandering through the peaceful pine forest and rolling grassy dunes before heading down to the soft, expansive sands for a splash or a picnic.
Wildlife enthusiasts are in for a treat too! Formby’s red squirrel reserve is just a short stroll away, and the beach itself is a brilliant spot for birdwatching. But that’s not all Formby has to offer. Climb up the sand dunes for stunning views across the Irish Sea, on a clear day, you might even spot the mountains of Cumbria in the distance.
If you’re up for stretching your legs even more, follow the Sefton Coastal Path which stretches 21 miles from Southport to Crosby. This is a wonderful UK walk offering the chance to spot other beauty spots along this incredible coastline.
Handily located just a short train ride from Liverpool city centre, Formby Beach is a brilliant way to add a breath of fresh sea air to one of the UK’s best city breaks.

Tucked away along Northern Ireland’s awe inspiring Causeway Coast, Castlerock Beach is a fantastic choice for those in search of a peaceful day out by the sea, perfect for families, couples, or groups of friends craving a little coastal calm.
This beautiful stretch of golden sand, roughly 1km long, is framed by the dramatic Downhill cliffs to the west and the serene River Bann estuary to the east, creating a stunning natural backdrop for your visit.
Access to the beach is via newly constructed boardwalks that lead you through the ancient sand dunes, some of the oldest in Ireland. These dunes are protected as both a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and an Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI), highlighting their importance to the region’s biodiversity and ecology.
On the practical side, Castlerock Beach is well-equipped for a comfortable visit. There’s free parking available along the promenade, seasonal lifeguard cover during July and August, and accessible facilities for disabled visitors too.

If you are looking for part of the beach that is dog-friendly all year round, head to The Denes part of the beach, which is just south of Gun Hill so you can bring your furry friend along for a scenic hike, too!

This impressive vista can be enjoyed from the beach itself or on a walk along the extensive promenade. St. Bees Beach is also home to the starting point of the famed Coast to Coast Walk, which stretches from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire.
